Penzance is good but it has no taste next to this. I do note this is good for something different. I really tried to like the taste, but not being a regular consumer of Latakia, I found that exotic leaf to be simply "over the top" in this instance. There's not much subtle about this blend and it starts like it finishes. I must say that I was surprised at the smoothness of this blend considering its very high latakia content. If Nightcap is Wagnerian, this is a brass band. I foresee lots of Pirate Kake and Star of the East Flake in my pipe smoking future. Mind you, its a good mixture; smooth and heavily smoky. The tobacco seems dry enough when being rubbed out but is hard to keep lit without drying. I have one on hand aging, but will wait for another purchase to get another tin going. I have not gone back to it for several months, but it is certainly a must try for the latakia lover. I absolutely love this stuff; it is smooth, dark, full and creamy. So, as an amateur pipe smoker, I have discovered with the help of this blend (and a few others) that I am apparently a Latakia-phile. Hey its not your fault latakia, burley will help you in this kake. This powerful, Latakia laden stuff breaks up easily. They have the Latakia and Burly playing so well t ogether in this blend. It's Latakia in overwhelming amounts. This is a good blend if you really want to know what "Latakia Forward" means. It actually made my neighbor come out and ask if I was burning tires. I will gladly "walk the plank" with this pirate anytime! I knew by the guy who I traded tins with ( He got an old tin from me of Kingfisher ) that it was a full bore Latakia blend, I have to say I am most pleased. I highly recommend it. I enjoy English blends regularly but not exclusively. It joins a favorite list and while it wont be a regular part of my rotation I definitely will smoke it when I need something different in my smoking rotation. Mild nicotine. I received a free sample of this with an online order, and it quickly became my favorite. This is a premium smoking tobacco that i highly recommend. It is rich. I have no idea what the room note is because I smoke on the porch but I imagine it would be very potent. It then was lost on my tobacco shelf until August 2015. While I may still prefer some other tinned english tobacs, the price is right for this stuff. Medium to strong nic hit with absolutely zero bite. a booming amount of latakia, some burley and orientals. End of speech. The burly and Orientals are there to round it out a bit but the star is the smoky lat. It doesnt burn great, needs some relights but thats ok, were not in a slow smoking championship after all. In the tin you will find a dark square Crumble Cake, very easy to break apart and to load your pipe. Truly, the good tobaccos are better with age and this is one of them!!! No bite. The Burley and Turkish help to smooth out the smoke and add faint delicious undertones, but the Latakia is supremely dominant throughout the smoke, and never falters. C&D style; this blend smokes down to the last puff leaving a fine volcanic type ash that won't plug up the bowl. If you dont find any pure Latakia in the market you can easily buy this one and make your own mixtures. I do enjoy a good English, and one with a good balance of Latakia. So Im not sure if its a good idea or not but I went thru a pound in a week. Second mistake: Burley has no proper taste; its a neutral tobacco without a specific taste. The aftertaste is yummy smokey incensy latakia. If you want to strip the gears of a non-smoker, well folks this Latakia packed blend will get the job done. I love this tin note being so leathery woody and sour. Best smoked after a meal (not before) or it will overpower one's palate. Once you puff it very slow it will reveal beautiful oriental spices - peppery cardamom and pine needles - never overpowered and with a nice complexity. After a couple of minutes of gentle drawing my mouth became very dry and so I put the pipe down and went back into my house to get a glass of home vinted pear wine -slightly sweet - to quench the fire. Moisture level is perfect right out of the brick, rub-out is easy, and it burns properly. It lends itself well to smoking out of a cob, in my experience. There are a quite a few stems in my batch, I might go as far as to call it stemmy. It requires one to slow down and enjoy the ritual and preparation of a great pipe smoke. A beautifully smokey taste with a sweet background and almost barn sawdust background note that burnt down to the bottom with a beautiful creamy mouthfeel. Although PK is very obviously a strong lat bomb, I found it to be remarkably smooth, much more so than Star of the East and that PK is actually one of the finest smokes I have had the pleasure of smoking. , . The burley appears for a moment after lighting, then steps back to make way for full- force latakia with bits of tasty turkish aroma punctuating. A few puffs into the bowl, the Latakia smooths out a bit and it is just a great smoke. Somehow, none of the blends I tried hit the spot, offering only a mere tantalizing hint of the Latakia pungency that I was after. But Pirate Kake is definitely in that ball park IMHO. It still took a fair amount of relights to get it going each time. With a little Burley and Oriental for balance, you're going to like this blend. Nose is definitely noticeable but not overpowering as some here suggest or like some aromatics. Well, Pirate Kake brings back fond memories of mother dear stewing daddy?s boots in the hard winter of ?78. It seems to mellow the Latakia a bit, taking the edge off slightly and making it a little creamier. Look no further for the best latakia blend! Unlike Cornell and Diehls Tuggle Hall which you have to keep re-stuffing back in there. Doesnt age well after being opened for long 2 weeks seems to be it and it starts losing its potency. A velvety, and almost full bodied, smoke with a strong taste of Latakia-woodiness, thats perfectly balanced by the creamy sweet, buttery burley and cavendish. But I give it credit for it?s unique presentation and the courage to produce it at all. It's quite easy to peel off the cake layer and get it ready for smokable condition. Takes a while to get it going. It is far from being monochromatic though, which I will get to in a second.
