As a general rule, Woodgate Beach offers an excellent beach for visitors to drive on. You see, a lot of the tracks in the National Park are soft sand and also dry weather only tracks. However, I chose to head a little further south and back inland through the fertile plains to Childers to finish my short stay in the region. Camping at destinations on beach's like this are something we need to protect. Both provide close access to the water and beach activities. It guards its historic centre with a vast outer wall and represents a valuable cultural legacy that UNESCO has classified World Heritage. Back out on to the main track, it's just about time to drop your tyre pressures, as either the track behind the dunes, or the beach run itself can get pretty soft. Camping is permitted behind fragile foredunes, just a short walk to the water and beach. Depending on how long you do manage to wrangle yourself away from the daily grind, there is plenty more to see and do in the area, and I for one would have loved to have spent a whole lot more time exploring. For the less-dedicated fishermen who only fish all night and half the day, a walk along the shoreline with the better half is a must. Always use the established beach access ramps when driving onto the beach as these are boarded which helps minimise the considerable damage being done to the dunes by those who insist on making new tracks. On a previous trip one grey-shirt picked through our fire pit looking for unburnt ends of local wood, so be warned.
